NIA team reaches Kolkata to probe Mominpur violence, seeks handover of all accused – India Today

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team has submitted an FIR before a special court seeking the handover of all those arrested in connection with the Mominpur violence in Bengal.

By Rajesh Saha: A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team has reached Kolkata to probe the Mominpur violence and has submitted an FIR before a special court seeking the handover of all those arrested in connection with the violence.

Two communities clashed in Mominpur-Ekbalpur, following which police arrested 63 people and clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the area.

Soon after taking over the investigation, the NIA today filed an application to extradite all of the accused arrested by the Kolkata Police.

Debasish Mallick Chowdhury, special public prosecutor for the NIA, told India Today, “Today, the FIR was received. An application has been filed with the NIA’s special court in Kolkata, requesting the handing over of all documents, including the case diary of the earlier registered case by the Kolkata Police, as well as the production of arrested accused persons before the court “.

“After hearing the NIA special judge, Siddharth Kanjilal, chief judge of the city season court in Kolkata, has been pleased to allow the said application there by directing the IO of the case to hand over all materials, including the case diary, to the NIA. They will be brought before this court on October 28,” Debasish Mallick Chowdhury told India Today.

Sources also said that the NIA has taken over a related case, which was filed by the Ekbalpur police station in Kolkata.

MOMINPUR CLASHES

On October 9, vehicles were vandalised and people hurled stones in Kolkata’s Mominpur area. According to the police, the violence ensued after religious flags put up for Milad un-Nabi were allegedly torn down.

As the violence escalated, a large number of people surrounded the Ekbalpur Police Station. Security was beefed up in the area. Several policemen were injured in the violence, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Soumya Roy, who was hit by a crude bomb.
