Kolkata: In the middle of the next week, a system over the Bay of Bengal might provide another wet period to Kolkata.

With Durga Puja less than two weeks away, Kolkatans are likely to be affected by any rain, whether it falls during the week or on the weekend.

“A low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal on Sunday. It is likely to intensify into a well-marked low pressure by Tuesday,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.

“The effect of the system on Kolkata will depend on where it takes shape. The details will be clear by Sunday.” In Kolkata, it was a lovely and bright Friday morning.

The sun was beginning to show, but as the day wore on, it was obscured by clouds. The Victoria Memorial had ominous-looking black clouds in the distance at 1:30 p.m.A brief period of heavy rain followed.
For the remainder of the day, the sky remained cloudy. The monsoon trough’s location and a low-pressure region over Uttar Pradesh, a holdover from the depression over the Bay of Bengal last weekend, were blamed for the circumstances by the Met office.

“There is a low-pressure area over Uttar Pradesh. The monsoon trough passes over Patna and Digha into the Bay of Bengal,” said Das.

“As a result of these two, there is significant moisture in the atmosphere. As the sun came out, the heating and the moisture combined to form thunderclouds, which led to the rain.”

Areas in North 24-Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly districts also got rain on Friday. Similar showers have not been ruled out over the next couple of days.
