Kolkata: The makers of Durga idols in Kolkata are pleased with a significant order flow from overseas nations following two consecutive sluggish seasons brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, however bookings have not yet returned to their pre-coronavirus levels.
According to a spokeswoman for a major organisation of artisans in Kumartuli, the clay modellers’ hamlet in north Kolkata, international orders grew three times over the previous year and by 12 times above the 2020 number.

This year, almost 60 idols are going abroad. According to Kartik Pal, a spokeswoman for the Kumartuli Mritshilpi Samity, the number was no more than 20 in 2021 and five the year before.

The festival starts at the end of September, and while some idols have already been delivered, more will follow soon. However, senior artist Mintu Pal informed PTI that 100 idols were exported from Kumartuli to foreign countries in 2018 and 2019.

The idols that are shipped to countries in Europe, North and South America, and other places are typically made of fibreglass. Unlike those who perform the ritual in India, those who worship the goddess abroad use the same idol for a number of years in a row.

The addition of new locations to their roster of offshore nations is another cause for celebration for the craftsmen. In contrast to last year, when Mintu Paul claimed he could only send 5–6 idols from his studio in Kumartuli, this year there are 14.

In response to a query, he stated that the cost of an idol shipped abroad starts at Rs. 1 lakh in Indian currency and increases based on the idol’s height and the materials utilised.

The good news, according to Mintu Pal, is that he is sending idols to two additional countries: Uganda and Switzerland. Mintu Pal expressed the hope that the momentum will continue beyond next year’s Durga Puja.
