Kolkata: Feeder service, drop gates may keep Sec V snarl-free – Times of India

KOLKATA: The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) is coming up with a traffic management and dispersal plan for Sector V keeping in view the increasing pedestrian and vehicular traffic following the introduction of East-West Metro. RITES, the agency that was engaged by NDITA, has submitted its report with several recommendations for seamless pedestrian and traffic movement in the IT hub.
“The agency has placed their report which is now being examined,” said NDITA chairman Debashis Sen.

Officials said that among the points that have already been discussed is to set up centrally controlled pedestrian drop gates at five points at the Metro station site for dispersing pedestrian traffic.
“The Sector V Metro station area is facing traffic challenges. The pedestrian road crossovers at the Wipro gate are making it all the more difficult. The plan is to set up the drop gates, which will be synchronized with traffic signals, for pedestrians to cross the road,” said an official.
RITES have identified two spots – one near Munsik bheri and another near Chintasing bheri – to set up off-street parking facilities with approximately 30% of all the parking lots reserved for parking for durations less than five hours and the rest for parking for over five hours. The parking bays and lots should be marked physically on the pavement with paint.
For collection of parking fees, RITES has suggested the introduction of digital payment mode. Small display boards should be installed at all the parking lots that will show the QR code where users will be able to deposit the parking fee directly to NDITA by scanning the code, RITES has advised.
Keeping in view the gatherings during public exam days, RITES have also suggested to have temporary parking arrangements within the state transport corporation premises. The suggestions also include having internal feeder route services within Sector V along four routes with a proposal to introduce 10- to 12-seater electric vehicles to ferry passengers from the Metro station and parking lots to the offices.
RITES has also recommended not to allow any permanent structure on pavements. Instead, hawkers should be issued a licence for using motorised or non-motorised movable vans or carts for vending in Sector V during a fixed hour of the day, the agency has suggested.
