Kolkata: The renovation work on the Maa flyover for rainwater and drainage network has been started by KMDA. This is being done to avoid the massive issue of waterlogging during severe rains. New drainage pipes for storm water will be installed on the entire 4.3km main stretch of Maa flyover, which runs from Science City to the AJC Bose Road flyover.

The estimated cost for the revamp project has been estimated to cost around Rs 1.2 crore. Officials said the replaced pipes will avoid the problem of waterlogging during heavy rains.

Over the last few years, waterlogging has been constantly troubling people on certain stretches of the carriageway.

Maintenance work on the drainage system of Maa flyover is being done for the first time since it was inaugurated in October 2015. Most pipes were blocked in the drainage line, officials said.

“Besides disturbing traffic movement, waterlogging on the carriageway in the long run can be detrimental to the flyover’s structure as the water could seep into the concrete,” said an official.

An agency has been hired to carry on the repair work while KMDA engineers are overseeing the project. “Work started last week and is expected to be complete in a month. Due to heavy traffic both on the flyover and below, work could not be executed very fast. But is being carried out steadily in a careful manner,” said a KMDA official. Officials said the work could be done only during the day.
