KOLKATA: A woman in her late thirties, Subhra Ghorui, a resident of Amtala in South 24 Parganas, who had come to the OPD of ESI Hospital at Joka for the treatment of a relative, threw her slippers at Partha Chatterjee while he was being taken back to the CGO Complex in Salt Lake by Enforcement Directorate officers after his mandatory health check-up on Tuesday afternoon.
Ghorui was unrepentant. The only grouse she had was that her ‘chappal’ did not hit Chatterjee. At one point, she even claimed she had come to the hospital to do what she did. Chatterjee was already seated inside the SUV, the windows rolled up and ready to leave the hospital, when the incident took place. The chappal hit the windowpane. Ghorui was agitated and visibly upset even after the incident. Police questioned Ghorui and let her off.
Ghorui, who claimed she had “high pressure” and suffered from “headaches”, had come to get medicines for a relative admitted here, besides getting a check-up completed at the OPD. She claimed she lost her cool on seeing Chatterjee “being treated like a VIP”.
“If I had welcomed him with a garland, would it have made all of you happy? How can a man who cheated thousands of poor and made crores to buy property and gold be brought to hospital in an air-conditioned car? Why is he being provided the wheelchair? He should be dragged all the way by a rope tied around his neck. I am surprised that you are asking me why I threw my slippers at him. I wish it had landed on his head,” the woman, dressed in a green saree and pink blouse, told the media. She added that she would go back wearing just one slipper. “I did the right thing. Why should I not do it…. Do not ask me anything else.”
Neither the local cops nor the central forces, though, tried to stop her. Till evening, no legal proceeding was initiated against the mother of a 16-year-old daughter. “She had to take her slippers off to enter OPD. She was removing it when she spotted Chatterjee being led to the ED car,” said a cop.
Back at Ghorui’s home, her husband and daughter were stunned. “My mother has been mostly staying at home. She is not keeping well and has high BP. She is actually very quiet at home, unlike what you saw today,” said her daughter who studies in Class XII and plans to pursue BSc in nursing.
Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen reminded ED that since Chatterjee is in their custody, the onus of ensuring his safety also lies on them.
