Ten days ago, 5,000 booster doses were administered at 135 KMC run vaccination clinics and 8 mega clinics

KOLKATA: Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) health department has decided to reach out to gated communities across the city to increase booster dose coverage.
Mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday said the civic body would conduct special vaccination camps at high-rises and housing complexes from next week. According to Hakim, though the demand for the booster dose was steadily rising across 144 KMC wards, the civic body would set up vaccination camps at large housing complexes so that the residents can avail the facility within the compound.
“I have asked the KMC health department to start setting up vaccination camps from next week to reach out to citizens in large numbers,” said Hakim.
A KMC health department official said, ever since the booster dose for the 18-plus group was introduced on July 14, the number of doses was on the rise each day.
“Though the initial response was lukewarm, the pace of the drive accelerated later. The number of doses each day rose from a mere 5,000 doses 10 days ago to 15,000 on Friday. We are expecting a further rise in demand,” said a KMC health department official.
The civic official said the demand was particularly rising in areas such as Behala, Tollygunge, Garia, Kasba, Garfa, Jadavpur-Santoshpur belt and some neighbourhoods located off Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. “We are planning to hold camps at housing complexes in these areas,” the official added.
