KOLKATA: Several Calcutta University affiliated colleges that activated their admission portals on Monday as directed by the higher education department have listed a number of criteria for candidates to apply for undergraduate courses.
It means that apart from scoring a certain percentage of marks in the subjects at the plus-II level for the subjects they are applying for, the candidates will also have to meet certain other conditions like minimum percentage of marks in a related subject or in English.
According to principals, this will not only help them ensure that students who meet the criteria only apply for those courses but will also help the applicants to know that it is important to have a grasp on a related subject or English apart from the subject they are applying for to study in college.
At Bethune College even students applying for HIndi or Bengali Honours must have 50% marks in the previous qualifying examination apart. For Bengali honours, the applicant must also have 55% in aggregate and 60% marks in Bengali. For Hindi honours, the applicants must have 50% in aggregate and 50% in Hindi.
At Maulana Azad College, those applying for microbiology honours must have scored 60% in aggregate along with 60% in chemistry.
In Scottish Church College, if there is a tie in calculation of the index marks in English (20% of aggregate plus 80% of marks in English), marks in Hindi/Bengali will be considered as tie-breaker.
“We have been barred from conducting admission tests by the education department so we do not have many options in ensuring that the students have a good foundation in English and mathematics which are required for studying most subjects. In the past we have found that despite scoring well in most subjects, students find it difficult to comprehend the lessons in class because of weak foundation in English and mathematics. The eligibility criteria help us to a certain extent at filtering applications at the very initial stage,” said the principal of a north Kolkata college.
At Seth Anandram Jaipuria College, an applicant requires 55% aggregate along with 60% in mathematics and 50% in English to apply for economics honours.
At Asutosh College, a candidate must have scored 50% in aggregate and passed in mathematics and physics to apply for electronics honours.
