KOLKATA: After meeting the baul singer who alleged she was raped, assaulted and held hostage in an abandoned cowshed on Tuesday afternoon, the chairperson of West Bengal Women’s Commission (WBWC) said the survivor has said she wanted the accused to be punished without lodging a police complaint. During the interaction, the singer also told WBWC chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay that the Ultadanga police station had taken care of her and even offered Rs 1,000 for medicines when she approached them.
Gangopadhyay told TOI she has gone through the initial medical reports. “Another test will be done on Sunday. Since the survivor has registered a case, I want a fair investigation so that justice is delivered.”
She will be going on a spot visit on Sunday. “The singer told us the first police station in Chitpore she had approached on Wednesday directed her to the Ultadanga police station since they did not have jurisdiction. I feel the Chitpore police station should not have let her go this way. They should have taken care of her and assisted in registering a case,” Gangopadhyay said.
“Though there were allegations that the Ultadanga police station had refused to register her case on Thursday, the survivor told us she wanted the accused to be punished without lodging a police complaint. ‘Case korbona. Loktar shashti hok’ – that’s what she said while narrating what she had told the cops there,” Gangopadhyay added.
According to Gangopadhyay, the survivor told her that she knew the accused before her husband died four years ago. “He used to address her as ‘mashi’. He had praised her recital at a programme near Bengal Chemical. She also told us she has met the wife of the accused, too. The accused has been arrested and charged under IPC 376 and 379. We will be meeting him soon,” she said.
