Man ‘sneaks into Mamata’s Kalighat residence’, arrested | Cities News – The Indian Express

The man scaled a wall of Banerjee’s house at 34B Harish Chatterjee Street to enter around 1 am, police said. He remained on the premises, spending the night sitting in a corner, and was spotted only in the morning by security personnel, a senior police officer said. “They informed the Kalighat police, who arrested the man,” he said.

Senior officers of the Kolkata Police, including City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, reached the spot. A probe is on, officers said.

The incident triggered a security scare with questions being raised over how he went past a large number of personnel who guard the CM’s private residence. Investigators are also trying to determine the possible motives behind the breach.

Preliminary investigation, however, suggests that the culprit is either a thief or a person of “unsound mental state.” However, the police have not yet ruled out other angles.

“We are talking to him and trying to find out his whereabouts. We are also trying to find out whether someone instructed him to enter the CM’s residence with a motive,” the officer said.

Later in the day, the Kolkata Police said in a statement, “Today, an incident of security breach was reported at HCM West Bengal’s residence. One person somehow had sneaked into the HCM residence complex with mischievous intention. Later his presence was discovered by the security personnel and he was intercepted and handed over to Kalighat Police station. CM Security and Law Enforcement Agencies have taken serious cognizance of it.” The release further said, “Further probe is underway. Immediate steps are being taken to further enhance security in and around HCM residence.”
