Cop held for hitting student with SUV granted bail – Times of India

Kolkata News

Kolkata: A day after sub-inspector Soumen Das of Lake police station was arrested for allegedly hitting an MBA student on BT Road at Sodepur Traffic More with his SUV on Saturday night, the accused was granted bail by a Barrackpore court on Monday.
Around 9pm on Saturday, commuters on BT Road were shocked when an SUV with a police sticker on it hit a youth, who got stuck on the bonnet of the car, and was dragged by it for about 1km.
The youth, Rabi Singh, an MBA student, was seen shouting for help and capturing the scene on his mobile camera. He was later beaten up mercilessly by the car driver, a sub-inspector(SI).
Police on Sunday arrested the SI, identified as Soumen Das and produced him in the court after the injured youth, Rabi Singh, lodged a complaint with Khardah police with the video clips he had filmed on his cell phone. “I can’t understand how he got bail. Police should have taken strict action against the accused. During the incident on Saturday night, I came out of the restaurant and protested after a part of my car’s rear side was damaged. Then the SI, deliberately moved his car ahead at a high speed and hit me. While I was trying to save myself, I lost my balance and got stuck on the bonnet of the car. Otherwise, I could have been crushed to death. I cried out in horror and shouted to stop the car. But despite repeated appeals, he didn’t stop and dragged me for about one kilometre from Sodepur Traffic More to Sodepur Dhankal More along BT Road. Later, he stopped the car, got down of it and thrashed me severely,” Singh said.
