West Bengal govt advisory for satellite channels – Times of India

KOLKATA: The state government has issued an advisory to control the broadcast of “misleading news” through various satellite channels that might cause the breach of peace in the state.
The home department advisory wanted TV channels to keep in mind the national integrity while broadcasting news. The government asked channels not to use words or visuals that “reflect a slandering, ironical in the portrayal of certain ethnic, linguistic and regional groups or communities that can infringe the provisions of the act.”
It metions a similar advisory by the I&B ministry in April. “Some channels broadcast debates having unparliamentary, provocative and socially unacceptable language, communal remarks and derogatory references that may have a negative psychological impact on viewers and may also incite communal disharmony and disturb peace at large,” the advisory said.
The I&B ministry advisory had stated that programmes offending good taste or decency should not be aired. Channels should not criticize any friendly country, it had said. It also asked to refrain from attacks on religions or communities. It also warned about obscene, defamatory, false and suggestive innuendos and half-truths.
Suresh Sethia of Siti Cable said, “The channels have to act as they are to follow the guidelines of I&B ministry, as also follow the Nabanna guidelines.”
