Kolkata: Model-actor Manjusha Neogi found dead, 3rd such case in fortnight – The Indian Express

“She was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a dupatta at her parents’ house around 7.30 am today. The body was sent for postmortem,” said a police officer. Police suspect it to be a case of death by suicide.

Family members said Manjusha was deeply shocked by the death of her friend De Majumdar and had slipped into “acute depression” since then.

Manjusha and Bidisha were friends for the past three years, and she had last gone out for a shoot — had worked in small roles in Bengali TV serials — on Thursday, said family sources.

“She was extremely upset and acutely depressed after hearing about Bidisha’s death, and would often say that Bidisha had gone to a better place. I would do the same, Manjusha had said after Bidisha’s death,” said Basanti Neogi, Manjusha’s mother.

One of Manjusha’s friends claimed that she had attempted suicide earlier, too. “She had even attempted suicide about two and a half months ago when Bidisha was alive. So, how can Bidisha’s death be the reason behind her suicide? This means that she had suicidal tendencies and her family should have been conscious about it,” said Manjusha’s friend from the modelling industry.

According to sources, Manjusha had married a photographer around six months ago. “On Wednesday, my son-in-law had come here to pick her up, but she wanted to stay with us for some more time. There was no issue between them. My son-in-law would even tell my daughter to quit modelling as he earns well, but she used to tell him that modelling was her passion. My son-in-law never objected to her work,” added Manjusha’s mother.

Bidisha, a popular face in bridal make-up shoots, was found hanging from a ceiling fan after neighbours broke open the door of her rented flat at Nagerbazar locality on Wednesday, police said. She had worked in the 2021 short film ‘Bhaar- The Clown’ with popular actor Debraj Mukherjee in the lead role. She had left her house at Kankinara in North 24 Parganas on Sunday and had on Tuesday spoken to her family for the last time.

In connection with Bidisha’s death, an unnatural death case has been registered and the Barrackpore Commissionerate is interrogating gym trainer Anubhav Bera based on the suicide note recovered by police.

On May 15, Pallavi Dey, who played the female lead in the TV show ‘Mon Mane Na’, was also found hanging at her rented apartment in the Garfa area. Her post-mortem report ascertained suicide. Later, her live-in partner Sagnik Chakraborty was arrested by the Kolkata Police on a complaint lodged by her family, accusing him of extortion and murder. The family alleged that They had alleged that Pallavi used to pay for his lavish lifestyle. Chakraborty is currently in the custody of the police.
