Truck hit job: 20 minutes, five accidents, six injured in Kolkata – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: A sand-laden truck — trying to flee from Rajpur after it smashed into three autos and damaged a light post — got involved in a series of accidents in a span of 20 minutes over a distance of eight-odd kilometres. In all, the truck was involved in five different accidents that left six people injured. Among the injured, the condition of three persons — a 55-year-old pedestrian and two persons selling vegetables in a cart at Azadgarh — is stated to be serious.
The driver was finally nabbed from near Tollygunge Metro station after a constable blocked the road with guard rails and multiple vehicles. A mob then even tried to assault the driver, Iktiar Md Sheikh (36), a resident of Galsi in Burdwan, but cops managed to shift the accused first to a nearby traffic kiosk and then to Regent Park PS.
The incident was reported between 6 am and 6.20 am.
According to Regent Park Police and Regent Park traffic guard, Sheikh was driving a sand-laden truck towards Kolkata from Subhasgram. On the way, near Rajpur Market, he hit three autos and severely damaged a lamp post. One pedestrian (yet to be identified) was seriously injured. As locals chased the truck, Sheikh accelerated. When he reached near the popular 6 number bus stand, he hit a rickshaw. Bijoy Kashyap (49) received injuries on his left hand. The truck driver refused to stop.
At Rathtala Bazar, it hit a pedestrian Khubjar Ruidas (55), a resident of Bhangar. He received injuries on his nose and began to vomit. His condition is stated to be serious.
At Gachhtala, it hit an SUV and a private bus parked by the roadside. Jhuma Mukherjee (57), who was travelling in the vehicle, received left shoulder injury and began to vomit at the spot. The truck continued at the same speed and collided with a private bus.
The truck then reached Azadgarh where it hit a vegetable cart that was being pushed along by two relatives — Barun Naru (40) and Chobi Naru ( 65). Both received severe non-bleeding injuries.
“A primary breathalyzer test revealed that Sheikh and his helper were not drunk. Sheikh claimed he was trying to flee from the first accident. We are talking to our legal team to slap stringent charges on him,” said a senior officer.
