IPL 2022 Highlights KKR vs LSG: Lucknow beat Kolkata in final over thriller – Hindustan Times

Marcus Stoinis then closes the match with another wicket as he cleans up Umesh Yadav in the final ball. KKR manage 208/8 in response to LSG’s 210/0. They lose the contest by 2 runs. LSG qualify for play-offs.

Rinku Singh gets a double after hitting Stoinis towards the mid-wicket region. He then tries to finish the contest, but Evin Lewis plucks a one-handed beauty as Rinku Singh departs for 40(15). KKR: 208/7 (19.5 overs)

Rinku Singh hits Marcus Stoinis for another maximum, this time over the long-off fence and the equation now drops to 5 off 3. KKR: 206/6 (19.3 overs)

With 21 required in the final over, Marcus Stoinis comes into the attack. The seamer pitches it wide off the off stump and Rinku Singh slams it for a four towards the cover fence. He then hits him for a six over the mid-wicket fence. KKR: 200/6 (19.2 overs)

Sunil Narine and Rinku Singh are not giving up. They hit Jason Holder for a six each as 17 runs come off the over. KKR: 190/6 (19 overs)

Rinku Singh and Sunil Narine combine to hit Avesh Khan for a six each as 17 runs come in the over. The pacer concedes 60 runs in his four overs. KKR: 173/6 (18 overs) | need 38 runs in 12 balls

Mohsin Khan picks his third wicket of the night as an ice cold Deepak Hooda claims a superb catch at the long-off fence. He departs for 5 (11). 

Meanwhile, Sunil Narine closes the over with a six as 12 runs come off the over. KKR: 156/6 (17 overs)

Easy pickings for Quinton de Kock as Sam Billings dances down the track against Ravi Bishnoi but fails to make any connection. He departs for 36 (24).

Meanwhile, 10 runs come in the over as KKR reach 144/5 after 16 overs.

After bowling two expensive overs, Avesh Khan makes a strong comeback and almost jolts Andre Russell with a brilliant yorker. The pacer concedes two runs in his over as KKR reach 134/4 after 15 overs. They need 77 runs in 30 balls

Marcus Stoinis is introduced in the attack and he strikes in his first over. Shreyas Iyer goes for the big hit but its elevation and not the distance as Deepak Hooda claims a superb catch in deep. The KKR captain departs after scoring 50(29). 

Five runs and a wicket come in the over. KKR: 132/4 (14 overs)

If any bowler who has been impressive tonight, it has got to be Mohsin Khan. The pacer has already scalped two wickets and does the same after being reintroduced in the attack. 

He hits the length perfectly as Shreyas Iyer tries to play it acorss the line but gets a leading edge. Fortunate for the KKR captain as it falls just short of the bowler. 

Just two runs come off the over. KKR: 127/3 (13 overs)

The boundaries keep coming as Shreyas Iyer hits Jason Holder for a maximum towards the backward square leg region. 10 runs come off the over as KKR reach 125/3 after 12 overs. They need 86 runs in 48 balls.

Shreyas Iyer and Sam Billings combine to hit Ravi Bishnoi for 16 runs in his third over. Iyer smashes two fours, while Billings hits a six against the spinner. KKR: 115/3 (11 overs)

Things are not going good for Avesh Khan. After an expensive first over, Sam Billings scoops the pacer for a six over the fine leg fence, which also is a no-ball. The wicketkeeper-batter then smashes a four towards the cover region for a four on the free-hit ball. The hitting continues as Avesh bangs it short, which is pulled for a four by Billings towards the mid-wicket region. 

22 runs come off the over as KKR reach 99/3 at the halfway stage. They need 112 runs in 60 balls. 

Ravi Bishnoi bowls another brilliant over as just four runs come off it. The over also saw Sam Billings survive a LBW appeal. KKR: 79/3 (9 overs)

Nitish Rana goes for the aerial route but finds Marcus Stoinis at long-off. That will be wicket number one for Krishnappa Gowtham as Rana’s show comes to an end on 42. 

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer keeps going as he hits the spinner for a massive six. KKR: 75/3 (8 overs)

Ravi Bishnoi manages to put some brake on the run flow as he starts off with a five-run over. KKR: 65/2 (7 overs)

Krishnappa Gowtham comes into the attack and he gets the same treatment. Nitish Rana hits the spinner for three fours as 13 runs come off the over. Meanwhile, KKR accumulate 60/2 in the powerplay overs. They need another 151 runs in 84 balls.

The boundaries keep coming as Shreyas Iyer joins the party. The KKR captain smashes Jason Holder for a four, follows it with a six and then a four before passing the strike to Nitish Rana. 16 runs come off the over as KKR reach 47/1 after 5 overs.

That was some hitting by Nitish Rana as he smashes Avesh Khan for five boundaries in his first over. 21 runs come off the over as KKR reach 31-2 after four overs.

Mohsin Khan packs both KKR openers. He bangs it short this time and Abhijeet Tomar mistimes his pull shot as the ball flies to KL Rahul at mid-on. He departs for 4(8). 

He concedes just two runs as KKR reach 10/2 after 3 overs.

Jason Holder starts well as debutant Abhijeet Tomar hits the tall seamer for a boundary to open his account. Five dots and a boundary as KKR reach 8/1 after 2 overs.

A back of a length ball by Mohsin Khan, which takes the inside edge of Venkatesh Iyer’s bat as Quinton de Kock dives to his left to grab a stunner. He departs for 0. 

Nitish Rana joins the action in the middle and he opens his account with a four. KKR: 4/1 (1 over)

The Quinton de Kock show continues in the final over as he hits Andre Russell for four consecutive boundaries. 19 runs come off the over as Lucknow Super Giants post 210/0 on the board. Quinton de Kock returns unbeaten on 140 (70), while KL Rahul scores 68*(51).  

KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock deal in sixes here. The Lucknow skipper welcomes the pacer with a six, and then passes the strike to De Kock. The wicketkeeper-batter then hits the bowler for three consecutive sixes, before he misses his line and bowls a wide. He ends the over with a single as 27 runs come in it. LSG: 191/0 (19 overs)

Quinton de Kock is dictating the proceedings here as he slams Andre Russell for a six and four. With that he also brings up his 100. 15 runs come off the over as Lucknow reach 164/0 after 18 overs.

KL Rahul welcomes Tim Southee with a boundary as he scoops a slow ball by the pacer over the wicketkeeper. Nine runs come off the over as LSG reach 149/0 after 17 overs.

Expensive by Varun Chakravarthy as Quinton de Kock hits the spinner for two huge sixes and a boundary. 18 runs come off the over as LSG reach 140/0 after 16 overs.

Quinton de Kock welcomes Sunil Narine with a massive six. The batter gets down on his knees and smashes the ball over the backward square leg fence. 11 runs come off the over as LSG reach 122/0 after 15 overs.

KKR bring back Umesh Yadav, who is bowling his final over. He starts off with a single as KL passes the strike to De Kock. His partner also does the same, courtesy to some ice-cold fielding by Narine at fine leg. They do the same for the entire over as six runs come off it. Meanwhile, KL Rahul also completes his half-century. LSG: 111/0 (14 overs)

Excellent batting by Quinton de Kock as he reverse sweeps a pitched up delivery Sunil Narine for a six towards the third man region. The pair of De Kock and KL Rahul also bring up the 100-run partnership. LSG: 105/0 (13 overs)

Quinton de Kock brings up his half-century in 36 balls. Meanwhile, Varun Chakravarthy concedes five runs in his over. LSG: 97/0 (12 overs)

Shreyas Iyer is forced to rely on his spinners as KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock go strong in the middle. Nitish Rana is introduced in the attack but the move doesn’t reap any dividends. He starts off with a 9-run over as LSG reach 92/0 after 11 overs.

KL Rahul deals in sixes as Tim Southee is brought into the attack. The Lucknow skipper hits him for a six on the mid-wicket region and then hits him for another, this time towards the backward square leg region. He also completes 500 runs in the season. 

15 runs come off the over as LSG reach 83/0 after 10 overs.

Andre Russell is introduced in the attack and the batter deals with by rotating the strike before Quinton de Kock launches him for a six towards the long-on fence. 11 runs come off the over as LSG reach 68/0 after 9 overs.

Another overpitched delivery by Varun Chakaravarthy and KL Rahul punches it past the bowler for a cracking four. 

He also oversteps while bowling the third ball of the over but De Kock fails to get anything of the freehit as Chakravarthy bangs it short, which surprises the batter. Nine runs come off the over as LSG reach 57/0 after 8 overs.

Another economical over by Sunil Narine as just 4 runs come in it. LSG: 48/0 (7 overs)

Varun Chakravarthy pitches it up as Quinton de Kock opens his arms and whacks the ball over the fielders for a cracking four towards cover. Despite the boundary just six runs come in the over as LSG reach 44/0 after 6 overs.

Umesh Yadav comes in to bowl his third over and he starts with a dot, followed by a single against Quinton de Kock. 

KL Rahul then takes charge and hits Yadav for a massive six on the on side and then finds another boundary, courtesy to a misfield by Tim Southee as 12 runs come off the over. LSG: 38/0 (5 overs) 

Shreyas Iyer introduces spin as Sunil Narine comes into the attack. The spinner starts with a tight over as just four runs come off it. LSG: 26/0 (4 overs)

Umesh Yadav is frustrated as Abhijeet Tomar drops Quinton de Kock on 11. The ball was pitched on length and De Kock tried to play it across the line but gets a leading edge and the ball flies towards the third man region. Abhishek Tomar had enough time to settle under it but he makes a mess out of it.

Meanwhile, De Kock closes the over with a maximum as LSG reach 22/0 after 3 overs. 

More runs for Quinton de Kock as Tim Southee pitches it slightly up on his pads. With the fine leg fielder up, he guides it past him for a boundary. The bowler recovers well after being hit for the four as just six runs come in his over. LSG: 14/0 (2 overs)

KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock start cautiously as they deal in singles, before Umesh Yadav bangs it short, which takes the edge of De Kock’s bat and flies over the wicketkeeper for a boundary. LSG: 8/0 (1 over)

Shreyas Iyer: “I’ve just told them (the team) that this is going to be our last opportunity for us to express ourselves to the maximum. Let’s do it for the coaches, management and for all the supporters who have been cheering right from the start and show them what kind of ability we’ve got to play at this level.” 

KL Rahul: “Last few games, it’s been tough chasing. Try and get off to a good start and put a good total on the board. We have to be positive, we’ve done really well in the tournament. Even after losing the last two games, we are still sitting at 16 points, that speaks a lot about how we have played in the tournament. Couple of bad games is not going to change it. We need to turn up, start fresh, try to win this game and enjoy it.”

“As a spinner, I am absolutely licking my lips at this pitch. It has got a bit tired, it’s very flat, there’s even grass coverage and it is still rock hard. This is going to turn, it’s going to grip for the spinners. The team winning the toss should bat first. If you can get to 155-160 on this pitch, you are in the game.”

Kolkata Knight Riders will be forced to change their winning combination with a Grade-III hamstring injury to Ajinkya Rahane. In his absence Aaron Finch can come back to playing XI and Sheldon Jackson can don the wicketkeeping duties in place of Sam Billings.

Lucknow Super Giants have the best record while batting first as they have endured four defeats, out of the five this season, while chasing.

Deepak Hooda has been one of the best performers from the Lucknow camp. Batting at an average of 31.23, he has so far scored 406 runs from 13 matches.

The worrying sign for Lucknow Super Giants has been their batting. In their previous two encounters the batters failed to put a fight. In the top of the table clash against Gujarat Titans, Lucknow were bowled out for 82, while they managed 154/8 in 20 overs against Rajasthan Royals.

Leading from the front, KL Rahul has been doing the bulk of the scoring for the franchise. However, the skipper has failed to replicate his earlier shows in the last three matches.

His opening partner Quinton de Kock too has been of color and was dismissed for 11 and 7 in the last two games.

Lucknow Super Giants, who have so far enjoyed a dominant run in the league, head into the contest on the back of consecutive defeats. The unit will also look to produce a much improved show and not leave things for their final encounter to avoid any last minute hiccup.

Another positive for KKR will be Varun Chakravarthy’s performance against SRH. The mystery spinner has been of colour throughout the campaign but he produced an economical display against SRH. The bowler conceded 25 runs in his four overs and picked a wicket. 

His partner Sunil Narine, who has been the better of the two, surprisingly expensive. Despite being hit for a few maximums, the Windies spinner conceded just 34 runs in his four overs.

The last time when these two sides met, Lucknow Super Giants steamrolled past Kolkata Knight Riders with a comprehensive 75-run win. Batting first, Lucknow piled 176/7 on the board. In response, KKR were packed for 101 in less than 15 overs. 

Avesh Khan and Jason Holder had then scalped three wickets each to decimate the KKR batting line-up.

Andrew Russell can emerge to be the gamechanger tonight, considering his recent exploits against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad. 

Russell had scalped two wickets against MI and produced a brilliant all-round show against SRH. He scored an unbeaten 49 off 28 balls and went to scalp three wickets in his four overs. 

The play-offs equation for Lucknow Super Giants is very simple. The KL Rahul-led unit are on the verge of advancing to the next stage and a win tonight will do that. 

They are currently placed at the third spot with 16 points and a will in fact will boost their chances of a top two finish.

The huge wins over Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad have helped Kolkata Knight Riders’ theoretical chances of making to the play-offs alive. Now against Lucknow Super Giants, Shreyas Iyer and co will hope for a similar show. 

A win will take them to level points with Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who still have a game each in their hands. The best thing for KKR at the moment is their run-rate, which stands at +0.160. If the other two results go their way, KKR can emerge as the fourth side to advance to the play-offs.
