A recommendation to demolish a Grade II-B heritage structure in north Kolkata to made way for a multi-storied building, citing the historic house’s dilapidated condition, has evoked protest from heritage experts.

The house, with the address 13A, Bidhan Sarani, is where India’s first female practising doctor, Kadambini Ganguly, along with her social reformer husband, Dwarkanath Gangopadhyay, lived from 1885 to 1898. Their son-in-law, writer and painter Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, also lived there.

Dwarkanath and Kadambini Ganguly’s great-grandson Rajib Gangulee said five of Upendrakishore and wife Bidhumukhi’s children, including Sukumar Ray, were were born there. READ MORE
