Life in death: A Kolkata doctor’s gift is set to give 3 people a second chance – Times of India

Kolkata: In life, she had saved countless lives as a doctor who used to work in the ICUs of various city hospitals. In death, she has given the most precious gift of all — by donating her organs — to at least three persons battling end-stage organ failure.
On Tuesday morning, Sanjukta Shyam Roy (43) was declared brain-dead at the very hospital where she had tended to patients for months. The transplant surgeries are expected to start in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to sources at Apollo Multispecialty Hospital, Roy had suffered a massive cardiac arrest at her home in New Town, and was rushed to the hospital on April 30. Even as doctors managed to resuscitate her, she subsequently suffered irreversible brain death.
The family was counselled about the prognosis. Once the family consented to the donation, she was declared brain-dead on Tuesday morning, and ROTTO (Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) was alerted.
Since Roy suffered a cardiac arrest, her heart was not viable for transplant. Her liver, both kidneys and corneas will be retrieved.
Being the donor hospital, ROTTO has allowed Apollo to retain the liver; the kidneys were allotted to IPGMER and ILS Hospital, Dum Dum.
