Kolkata: Sauna city singes at 37 degree Celsius, respite unlikely till April 30 – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: The city continued to be scorched by the relentless heat. While the maximum temperature remained 37°C on Wednesday, there could be no respite from the stifling conditions till April 30, said the Met office. Heat wave prevailed across six districts of the state but the mercury might start to drop from May 1 when moisture incursion is expected to rise.
Kolkata may receive a thunderstorm between May 2 and 4, it has been predicted.
“So far, we have seen dry heat in Kolkata due to low moisture in the air. It has prevented the formation of thunderclouds. But we expect moisture incursion after April 30. It may lead to a significant change in conditions. A system is expected to form over Jharkhand that could attract moisture from the sea and trigger a thunderstorm in Kolkata,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das.
From May 1, moisture incursion could slow down the intensity of the scorching westerly winds. “Maximum temperature could drop to 35°C-36°C even before a thunderstorm strikes. A thunderstorm may pull it down by two-three degrees more,” added Das.
Meanwhile, heat wave prevailed across Bankura, Purulia, West Burdwan, Hoogly, Jhargram and Murshidabad. While Asansol in West Burdwan recorded 43.5°C, Purulia singed at 43.1°C.
