KOLKATA: An extra day got added to the weekend calendar for the party goers in Kolkata. To cater to the rising footfall, several party venues in town are applying for permission to remain open till late on Sundays.
Nightclubs, pubs and lounges are crowded even on Sundays, which was considered an uneventful day, as revellers avoided staying out late at night as Monday is the first working day of the week.
But there has been a change in the trend, say owners and managers of nightclubs.
“On Sundays, we are taking permission to remain open till 1am. On other days, we have a full house, but guests are coming in on Sundays too,” said Souraj Bhowmick, corporate general manager of The Spirits in Sector V.
Earlier, revellers in Kolkata would party on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. “People are partying after two years, so there is a renewed excitement. Most places are full on Fridays and Saturdays. But there is a sizeable section that wants to avoid the crowd and that’s why they prefer to come on Sundays,” said Amit Agarwal, resident DJ of a nightclub on Park Street.
Refinery in Sector V has a live band performance every Sunday evening, which has become a huge attraction for their regular guests. “We are open till 1 am on Sundays as we have several guests coming in. The crowd is a good mix of youngsters, families and group of friends,” said Sk Shamim, general manager of Refinery.
Several night hangouts at star properties that stay open till 4am are also witnessing a similar trend. “We have a lot of families and youngsters coming in on Sundays,” said Mohammad Nadeem Siddique, general manager, operations, the Golden Park.
