The lawyers of the West Bengal BJP legal cell on Monday filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court seeking CBI probe into five recent rape cases in the state. The lawyers have expressed distrust in the state police in the five rape cases in Santiniketan, Namkhana, Pingla, Mainaguri and Netra.
The petitioners said the five cases also deserve a proper investigation like the one being conducted for the Nadia rape case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the Nadia rape case under the Calcutta High Court’s order.
The Calcutta High Court on April 12 directed IPS officer Damayanti Sen to oversee the investigation in the Matia, Ingrejbazar, Deganga and Banshdroni rape cases.
Series of rape cases in West Bengal
Namkhana rape case: A 40-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped on April 8 by five men in West Bengal’s Namkhana village. The accused poured kerosene inside the woman’s private parts and tried to burn her alive.
Netra case: A 45-year-old man from Netra village was arrested on April 13 for allegedly raping and threatening a minor girl. The victim, who is a student of Class 6, said in her police complaint that the accused sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions and threatened her not to reveal the incident.
Santiniketan rape case: A tribal girl was allegedly gang-raped by five men on April 14. According to the girl’s sister, they were returning from a fair at Kankalitala when the five men abducted her and raped her in a field.
Nadia rape case: A 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in Nadia district on April 4. She later succumbed to her injuries the next day. The victim’s family accused the son of a Trinamool Congress panchayat leader in the case.
