Kolkata: Student dies in bike crash on out-of-bounds flyover – Times of India

KOLKATA: A 21-year-old pillion rider — a final-year student of a private engineering college at Anandapur — died and the biker, his classmate, was injured when their two-wheeler hit the guard wall of the AJC Bose Road Flyover-Maa Flyover connector in the wee hours of Friday. The accident happened on Victoria Memorial-bound flank of the flyover. Incidentally, no bikes are allowed on the Maa or AJC Bose Road flyovers after 10pm.
One of the students, Subham Kumar, fell 40 feet down near the Nasiruddin Road-Circus Avenue crossing while the biker, Ankit Kumar, was lying on the flyover with serious injuries. Both of them, who hail from Bihar, were rushed to SSKM Hospital where Subham was declared dead.
This was the second major accident at the spot.
Cops said the duo, residents of VIP Nagar, broke traffic rules and ended up meeting with the accident. Ankit told them that they were out on a joyride after consuming liquor and dinner at night.
Police are trying to find out how the two managed to go up on the flyover. “They dodged the guardrails at the entry point to Maa flyover (from the Ruby-Science City side) and were also speeding. Besides, they were drunk while riding the bike,” said an officer from the East Traffic guard.
“The guardrails are put up in such a manner that no bike can pass through it. On Friday morning, there was a special block on the eastern flank where KMDA and HRBC were working on the two flyovers. As their vehicles were moving, there was some gap between the guardrails and the students might have managed to take the Maa flyover,” said the officer. According to Lalbazar, cops are posted from 9pm to 6am to ensure that no biker can take the Maa flyover.
DCP (Traffic) Arijit Sinha said they will check CCTV footage and match it with the Ankit’s statement to ascertain the chain of events leading to the accident. Those on duty at the Ruby end of the flyover will also be asked to explain how the two had managed to dodge their eyes.
