HOWRAH/KOLKATA: Howrah and Kolkata Police nabbed 21 persons for being allegedly involved in running illegal call centres in the twin cities. Cops arrested 13 persons from Belur Station Road on Saturday for running a fake call centre for a year.
A Howrah court sent the four accused to police custody and others to judicial custody.
Eight laptops and microphones were seized. “The accused targeted victims both in India and overseas by claiming their credit card payments were pending. The accused reportedly amassed close to Rs 1 crore,” said sources.
Kolkata Police busted another call centre at Prince Anwar Shah Road and arrested eight persons. “The accused targeted customers in the US, Europe and Australia. They would take control of the victim’s computer using AnyDesk software to update the system and duped them of lakhs,” an officer said. Intelligence reports recently said the “sex chatrooms” targeted Andhra Pradesh and Telengana and identified Lake Gardens as hub of fake call centres. “There has to be administrative support for putting such networks under scanner. Rented flats need to be checked,” said Arindam Chatterjee, resident of Lake Gardens.
