KOLKATA: A major fire broke out at Tangra’s Mehr Ali Lane in Tangra on Saturday evening at a leather factory.
With the area surrounding the warehouse thickly populated, at least 9 fire engines responded to the call around 5.23pm. Though no one is trapped in the building, the losses are expected to be substantial.
Within the next half-an-hour 6 more joined the fight. Such was its intensity that the flames could be seen a long distance away. With the smell of leather burning, some locals complained of uneasiness.

Till last reports came in around 8pm, the fire was still raging with 15 engines constantly at work with firemen first ensuring that it did not spread beyond the factory premises and having evacuated residents staying close to the premises.
There is still fear in the area with locals apprehensive that the fire might engulf their residences.
