Protests erupt in Kolkata, Amta over student’s mystery death – Times of India

Kolkata News
HOWRAH: Two days after Indian Secular Front worker and Aliah University alumnus Anis Khan was allegedly murdered at his home in Howrah’s Amta, protests and clashes erupted in Kolkata and Amta. While his father demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident, supporters of SFI and DYFI clashed with cops near Amta police station on Sunday.
State DGP Manoj Malaviya, who spoke with Howrah (rural) SP Soumya Roy at Bhawani Bhawan, asked for quick inquiry into the case led by a DSP-rank officer.

On Sunday, a team of forensic experts reached the residence of Khan and collected samples from the spot. They tried to recreate the sequence of events which might have led to the death. Late on Friday night, Khan was at his Amta home when four miscreants entered the house and allegedly pushed him off the terrace. Cops took the help of a sniffer dog to get leads on the case. Earlier in the day, a local police team was not allowed to enter the victim’s house as irate protestors blocked their way and forced them to return.

The 28-year-old former Aliah University student was pursuing his degree in journalism from Kalyani University. A former SFI member, Khan later joined the ISF. Over the past few years he took part several agitations, including those against the Citizenship Amendment Act. ISF leader Nawsad Siddique on Saturday claimed that Khan was getting repeated threats over the phone in the past few months.

On Sunday morning, SFI and DYFI supporters, led by SFI leader Dipsita Dhar, took out a rally demanding a quick inquiry into the incident. The rally was stopped by the Amta police and a scuffle broke out when the students and youth activists tried to break the barricade.
Theatre personality Koushik Sen and Bolan Gangopadhyay reached his house and spoke to his father Salam Khan.
“Khan stood up against the wrong. Such a gruesome and mysterious death for a student is very unfortunate. We are not happy with the police investigation. His father, too, is not happy with the progress of the inquiry. We are demanding the chief minister’s intervention. Khan’s killers should be arrested soon,” Sen said.
Khan’s father, who had earlier claimed that one of the killers was dressed as a cop and introduced himself as an officer, said that police are yet to find out those who came to their house that night.
“I cannot trust the police. They took too long to reach our home and by that time the killers had run away. A CBI inquiry can only unveil the truth,” said Salam Khan.
Howrah Police sources on Sunday said two cases were registered against Khan at the Bagnan PS. A warrant had been issued against him in one of the cases. But none of the officers went to their home that night.
Roy, the Howrah (rural) SP, said: “We have started an inquiry into the incident.
A DSP-rank official has been entrusted with the investigation.” On Sunday, he spoke to CID officials at Bhavani Bhavan.
