Kolkata To Miss Out On Twin Celestial Events | Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: A solar eclipse, followed by a lunar eclipse in a fortnight — the display of twin celestial shadows in such close proximity is set to dazzle people in many parts of the world on April 30, a new moon day, and May 16, a full moon night. However, Kolkata and the rest of India will miss out as the solar eclipse will happen at night and lunar eclipse during the day.
The partial solar eclipse will be visible from the south/south-western part of South America, Pacific and Atlantic oceans and Antarctica.
In India, it will begin at 12.15am and end at 4.07am. Since it will be night, sky lovers here will miss out on the solar eclipse.
On May 16, a total lunar eclipse will be seen in southern and western parts of Europe and Asia, Africa, large parts of North America, South America, Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean regions and parts of Antarctica.
It will start with a partial eclipse at 7.02am and end at 11.25am. Again it being day time, Indians will miss it.
“The silver lining for those who are interested in India is that the next partial solar eclipse on October 25 will be visible from Kolkata, though very briefly just before sunset. The next lunar eclipse, visible partially from Kolkata, will be on November 8,” said astrophysicist and former director, MP Birla Planetarium, Debiprosad Duari.
