KOLKATA: A 63-year-old lost his life after being hit by a private bus while trying to cross the busy APC Road close to Maniktala crossing on Monday morning. Police said the victim — identified as Kallol Ghosh from Dum Dum — was hit by a bus on route L-238 at 9.22am.
“Ghosh received severe head injuries and was rushed to RG Kar Medical College where he was declared brought dead. The police said that the bus driver initially escaped from the spot, but was arrested later.
“A study of the accident after analyzing the CCTV footage has led us to believe that the pedestrian — who was going for a medical consultation — was partly to blame, along with the bus driver who was going a notch higher than the speed limit. The signal was open for the bus to go through and the pedestrian suddenly came in front of the vehicle,” said an officer from the Fatal Squad of traffic police which is investigating the case.
Kolkata Police, which had begun a pedestrian movement study at important crossover points in the city last year, had identified Maniktala crossing as a spot where pedestrians often get stuck in the middle of the road as the signal turns green for vehicles.
“Senior citizens face trouble and we have proposed setting up a pedestrian island to allow such people to wait and stop accidents. We hope the plan will be sanctioned soon,” said an officer at Lalbazar.
