Kolkata: A 32-year-old sergeant from Tiljala traffic guard died after his bike skidded on a damaged portion of Basanti Highway on Monday. The victim, Sashi Bhusan Minj, who was wearing a helmet, succumbed to internal haemorrhage.
He was the route patrolling duty on the highway and the accident happened within 100 metre of the Kolkata Leather Complex (KLC) gate No. I, said an officer. This was the second death of a traffic cop while on duty this year. Earlier, a cop from Jorabagan traffic guard had lost his life after being hit by a truck at the CR Avenue-MG Road crossing .
Senior officers at Lalbazar said the stretch of the highway, full of craters and potholes, led to the accident of the sergeant. “He was not speeding as he wanted to stop near KLC to keep an eye on the traffic.
The accident took place around 3.45pm on the east-bound flank of the highway near Bantala’s Kantapukur under Tiljala traffic guard. His bike skidded on a large pothole and he sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to Ruby General Hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” said DC (Traffic-South) Atul V.
The traffic police unit claimed that Minj and other sergeants had reported about the bad condition of the stretch on the highway in the past. However, civic agencies were found repairing the stretch hurriedly a couple of hours after the accident on Monday. “A witness said he had tried to avoid a mini-truck and his bike fell on the pothole. He rolled over with his bike and the vehicle did not hit him,” said an officer.
Mink, who was originally from north Bengal and joined the force about six-and-a-half years ago, lived in the Park Street quarters.
