KOLKATA: The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination’s Semester 1 results for Class X (ICSE) and Class XII (ISC) board exams will be declared on Monday at 10am. Students can download their marksheets from the council’s official website cisce.org.
School heads indicated they expected better results due to the shorter syllabus in the semester format. Basanti Biswas, principal of Calcutta Girls’ High School, said, “I think students are happier with the semester system because the syllabus is smaller.” Supriyo Dhar, secretary of La Martiniere School, agreed saying, “Since the syllabus is divided into half, it is easier to study, so we expect favourable results this year.”
Sujoy Biswas, principal of Rammohan Mission School, said, “Semester-based exams are student-centric and fruitful for learning outcomes.”
Biswas added, “Now that the students of ages 15-18 are vaccinated, we would all prefer a return to offline exams. Even last year when exams were cancelled, students were hoping they could give the exams the traditional way rather than adapting to online exams. There are a lot of issues with the online mode, like unstable access to the internet and cheating that can be avoided with physical exams. Under the circumstances, CISCE has acted with great efficiency to conduct board exams.”
DPS Newtown principal Sonali Sen said, “Students have the best resilience to adapt to whichever mode of exams is given to them. They have put in a lot of hard work. We will wait for the results before assessing the best modes for student learning.”
The first semester exams were conducted using the multiple choice question format amidst prolonged uncertainty about whether the exams would be conducted in online or offline mode. In late October the council released a circular confirming that the exams will be held offline in school campuses.
“Offline exams are the best for transparency and we are glad that we are taking steps back to normalcy,” said Father M Thamacin Arulappan, principal of St Xavier’s Collegiate School.
