Kolkata: 265 prosecutions in first hour of night curbs – Times of India

Kolkata News
KOLKATA: As many as 265 motorists and bikers were prosecuted in the first hour of naka checks on Thursday when night restrictions were re-introduced in the city after the Durga Puja break. The next five hours – between midnight and 5 am – saw merely 47 prosecutions.
The figures, while less than August, is more than the first week of October when night prosecutions were around 70-90. Police believe compliance will improve as motorists encounter nakas and realise that restrictions are back. “Contrary to our expectations that two-wheelers would be the biggest violators, there were many cars on the road too,” said an officer.

According to sources, it was all the old trouble spots that once again recorded the highest number of violations. The East traffic guard comprising a section of Shakespeare Sarani, Park Circus and Maa flyover reported 46 violations. The Ultadanga traffic guard that handles a lot of North 24 Parganas traffic along with that from Bidhannagar reported 30 violations. The East and Ultadanga guards consistently reported the highest night violations in the past five months, said an officer.
Health experts said that restrictions were put in place in order to combat the transmission of the virus.
The police have also altered PCR vehicle deployment to cover a larger area at night to ensure restrictions are followed.
