Kolkata: A class X passed woman in Dum Dum, fluent in English posed as an American scientist and duped a Haryana-based trader and another teacher of Rs 44 lakhs on the pretext of selling him a “super antique material” used in an atomic research facility at the US civilian space programme in NASA.
She was arrested by Bidhannagar police on Friday and was brought to 12 days of police custody after the victims came to Narayanpur police station in Kolkata and lodged a police complaint on Thursday.
Madhumita Saha (35) had allegedly introduced herself as Mita Shah, the CEO of US Atomic Metal and Research Unit (AMRU) having its head office at University Park in Pennsylvania, USA and showed various licenses, permission, authorization from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
The complainant had mentioned three other persons in the FIR — Jasraj Rathod, Rehan Ahmed Qureshi and Abir Paul who had allegedly pretended as scientists and sellers and had convinced the complaints to pay Rs 22 lakhs each showing forged documents.
“The miscreants had met the complainants on social media and had convinced them that they had an antique radioactive material in their procession which they could buy at Rs 1 crore from them and later sell it to NASA for their research purpose for Rs one hundred crores. The victims had fallen for the trap and had even loaned a portion of money from money lenders to buy the item. They lodged a complaint when the miscreants stopped interacting with them and they realised they were duped,” said an officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
Cops said they would grill the woman further to get the whereabouts of her other associates and to find out if she had duped some other men in the past.
