Kolkata: 2 doctors shifted from govt hospital after sexual harassment complaint – The Indian Express

Kolkata News

The state Department of Health and Family Welfare has transferred two senior government doctors working in a well-known medical facility here after a trainee doctor accused one of them of sexual harassment. The other doctor is accused of shielding the main accused.

Officials on Friday said the transfer orders were issued the day before, four months after the trainee doctor filed a police complaint. The health department termed these “routine transfers”, saying two more doctors — one from Calcutta Medical College, and another NRS Medical — had been also transferred. Those doctors are not connected to the case.

On March 6, the complainant, a post-doctorate trainee doctor at a government hospital, filed a sexual harassment complaint against one of her departmental seniors. The woman alleged that the accused had sought sexual favours and threatened to ruin her career if she ever complained to anyone. He had been allegedly harassing her for one year, calling at odd hours and sending messages. The woman accused the head of the department of conspiracy and alleged he had supported the main accused.

A few staff at the hospital where the alleged incident occurred said the government took the matter seriously after the allegations became known. On Thursday, the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), which is affiliated with the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), protested at the hospital. Both the head of the department and the prime accused have been transferred to different state-run hospitals in the city.
