South Kolkata & airport areas reel under waterlogging, snarls – Times of India

Kolkata News
KOLKATA: The city received intermittent showers on Thursday under the impact of the monsoon trough that now stretches between Punjab and north Bay of Bengal. The rain was moderate in some parts of the city and light in other areas. Met office said though it will continue to rain, chances of a heavy downpour were low. Kolkata received 97 mm and 28 mm rain on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
The intermittent showers made waterlogging scenario worse for several south Kolkata neighbourhoods and its fringes. Kalighat, Chetla, Jodhpur Park, Golf Garden and Garia received a few spells of heavy rains which led to flooding in several stretches of these areas.
For residents of several neighbourhoods in Behala the situation became worse after spells of rains on Thursday. According to a KMC drainage official, at a time when the civic body was flushing out storm water from Behala’s low lying areas, fresh showers made the task difficult for them. “Though we have successfully drained out stagnant water from large stretches of Parnasree, we could not do so in areas like Mondalpara or Kailash Ghosh Row under Silpara belt as these areas are low lying and hence fresh showers made our task difficult,” he said.
Suman Pal, a Golf Garden resident, complained of slow draining out of storm water despite the KMC recently dedicating a drainage pumping station for the area. Similarly, residents of Kidderpore also complained of the civic body’s inaction in draining out stagnant rain water. “Every time a heavy downpour occurs we feel extremely anxious,” Munna Ansari, a local resident, said.

Waterlogged stretches near Haldiram

The situation was no better in areas off VIP Road. It was particularly bad at Haldiram More close to airport and parts of Chinar Park. Severe waterlogging triggered traffic snarls on VIP Road.
Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation officials said that there was extra pressure on the drainage pumping stations to flush out rainwater from Chinar Park area due to which the service road stretch at Haldiram More remained waterlogged till around Thursday afternoon.
Commuting woes heightened on Thursday after spells of rains left large parts of the city roads inundated. A handful of private buses, which hit the road in the morning, disappeared in the afternoon after roads got waterlogged.
