Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday asked West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) to file an affidavit stating its activities in the state by June 23.
Earlier, WBCPCR chairperson Ananya Chakraborti Chatterjee had filed a PIL against Election Commission, seeking directives so that the poll panel would have to pay compensation to children orphaned by Covid-19 and to families that lost children to coronavirus since the announcement of Bengal assembly polls.
The EC had declared election dates on February 26 and announced an eight-phase Bengal polls that started on March 27 and ended on April 29.
The bench of acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arijit Banerjee, while hearing the petition, expressed concern about WBCPCR’s activities and asked about its functioning and role during the pandemic.
Justice Bindal observed that WBCPCR’s website did not show any of its activities. The bench further observed that there was no information on the number of child deaths during the pandemic.
The court will hear the case on June 23 after WBCPCR files its affidavit. Debashis Banerjee appeared for the child rights panel and Deepayan Choudhury was the EC’s counsel.
