TMC leader accused of black marketing vital drugs from Calcutta Medical College; probe on – India Today

A trade union leader in West Bengal has filed a police complaint accusing a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA of being involved in black marketing of vital drugs used in the treatment of Covid-19 at the Calcutta Medical College.

Pramod Pandey filed his complaint after a leaked audio tape surfaced in which a doctor at the medical college is purportedly telling a nurse that she was taking away some vials of tocilizumab injection “after taking permission from TMC MLA Nirmal Majhi”. The audio tape has gone viral.

Pandey has alleged that there is a nexus between doctors at the Calcutta Medical College and the senior TMC leader due to which “vital injections worth lakhs have been siphoned off from the medical college”.

Speaking to India Today TV, Pramod Pandey said he was filing a police complaint to “expose black marketing of vital drugs”. He has demanded a fair investigation into the matter.

“It (complaint) is not political. A doctor is telling a nurse that she has spoken to a senior TMC leader. This cannot be taken lightly. A doctor took away 26 vials of tocilizumab from the hospital. Each vial is worth Rs 40,000 in the market. Imagine the price once it is black marketed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Calcutta Medical College has started an investigation following the police complaint.

The state health department has also sought a detailed report from the medical college.

Reacting to the allegations of involvement of a TMC leader, party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Nothing can be said without an investigation. I will not take any political stand. There will be a legal stand. The authorities concerned will take appropriate action.”
