Yaas impact: Kolkata may get rain from Tuesday – Times of India

Kolkata News
KOLKATA: The Bengal-Odisha coasts are likely to be hit by a severe or a very severe cyclonic storm on May 26, according to the Met officials. Brewing over east-central Bay of Bengal now, the cyclone is likely to gather intensity as it forms over the next three days and roars towards the coastline.
It can be more than just a cyclone when it hits land, predicted weathermen on Friday.

The system will turn into a low-pressure zone on Saturday and a depression on Sunday. “It will then move in a northwesterly direction like Amphan had but it’s too early to predict its further course of movement,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director, GK Das. Amphan had curved north subsequently and hit the Bengal coast, wreaking devastation in south Bengal and Kolkata.
Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal may start receiving light rain under the cyclone’s impact from the morning of May 25. Ruling out suggestions that since the time gap between the formation of the cyclone and its expected landfall was short, the storm could be less intense, Das said it was predicted to move coastward at a reasonable pace and it would gather enough strength to turn into either a very severe or a severe cyclone. “As of now, we expect it to be more than just a cyclone. Depending on how the system forms and moves, its intensity will be determined. But our meteorological indications suggest that it will be more than just a cyclone,” added Das.
Once the cyclone forms, a wind speed of 65 km/hr is bound to be generated. Depending on the intensity of the cyclone it could rise significantly. Met officials have already predicted heavy downpour in coastal and Gangetic Bengal from May 25. It could be accompanied by a wind speed of 40-50 km/hr, gusting up to 65 km/hr in north Bay of Bengal across the Odisha-Bengal-Bangladesh coasts.
Cyclone Amphan, that struck Kolkata on May 20, 2020, had a highest wind speed of 130 km/hr — which was the highest in the city in over 100 years. Aila that had hit in May 2009 was 30% weaker. Once the cyclone forms, it will be called Yaas.
