Kolkata: Depressed after his elderly parents were diagnosed with COVID-19, a 38-year-old private firm employee allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Howrah in West Bengal’s Greater Kolkata. The man’s COVID-19 positive father suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after he came to know about his son’s death.

The now-deceased private company employee, identified as Surajit Kerani, used to live with his wife, son and elderly parents in Howrah. Recently, his parents tested positive for COVID-19. His father, 81-year-old Tinkari, was being administered treatment at home while his mother was admitted to a hospital in Ghusuri area as her condition was critical.

Surajit got depressed due to the COVID-19 positive status of his elderly parents. He feared losing them. On Saturday morning, he locked himself in his room. His wife Rupa repeatedly knocked, but he didn’t open the door. She then, with the help of neighbours, broke the door open and found Surajit hanging from the ceiling fan, according to a report by The Times of India.

When the news of Surajit’s death was broken to his 81-year-old father, he suffered a cardiac arrest. He passed away before he could be rushed to a medical facility.

“My husband was depressed for the past few days and expressed concern about his parents’ health. I tried to console him, but nothing worked… He loved his parents and there is nothing wrong with that. But he did not even think what would happen to them if he was not there anymore he did not even sink me and our child,” the report quoted Rupa as saying.

Rupa has now sought help from the government for running the family. A local councillor said that efforts are being made to arrange help for the now-deceased father-son duo’s family.
