Kolkata: In yet another shocking incident of manual scavenging, four labourers were killed when they went inside a manhole for cleaning purpose in Kudghat area of West Bengal capital Kolkata. Three other labourers were injured in the incident.

The incident took place on Thursday at around 12.30 pm. Police said seven labourers were working at the site when the underground drainage system was being constructed at Purba Putiary Pump house near Aikyatan club.

A total of seven workers were rescued from the manhole. Two of the labourers were rushed to SSKM Hospital where they were declared brought dead. While two others were declared dead at Baghajatin State General Hospital, according to a report in Indian Express.

Three other workers have received injuries and are being treated at Baghajatin State General Hospital.

The victims have been identified as Jahangir Alam (22), Ali Liyakat Ali (20), Sabir Hossain and Mohd Alamgir, all natives of Malda district.

“As police received the information about the accident, Kolkata police, personnel of fire brigade and Disaster Management Group rushed to the spot to rescue the trapped workers,” said Jadavpur Deputy Commissioner, Rashid Munir Khan.
