Calcutta HC asks Visva-Bharati to settle former officials’ dues – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed Visva-Bharati to clear all financial dues of former vice-chancellor Sabujkali Sen and registrar Saugata Chattopadhyay. After present VC Bidyut Chakrabarty assumed charge, disciplinary measures had been taken against both. The latter had challenged the action in court.
Sen had been appointed acting vice-chancellor in 2018 when the post fell vacant. She took charge on February 3 and her tenure was supposed to end on February 24 the same year. Accordingly, the executive committee had convened a meeting on February 17 to appoint a new VC. Sen was removed even though there was no vote at the meeting. She went to Delhi to challenge the decision, following which the HRD ministry allowed her to continue as VC.
When Chakrabarty was appointed VC in November 2019, Sen refused to hand over charge. Chakrabarty suspended her on the ground that she was illegally occupying the post. Before the matter could be resolved, she retired. Chattopadhyay and Sen later moved HC.
Justice Arijit Bandopadhyay asked both the appellate and the defendants to submit their arguments in the form of an affidavit. The next hearing will be held four weeks later.
