Online gang blackmails Kolkata trader, extorts money – Times of India

KOLKATA: A gang on the prowl on internet has allegedly blackmailed a Behala-based trader and extorted Rs 11,000 from him. According to the complaint, the trader received several obscene messages and WhatsApp calls. The accused apparently took a picture of him in an inappropriate situation and then used it to to blackmail him.
The gang claimed they had a video of him in a compromising situation and would circulate it in public if he did not pay. The complainant said he had paid Rs 11,000 to several e-wallet accounts in multiple transactions before approaching Kolkata Police cyber cell. A case has been lodged under IPC sections 66C, 66D and 67 of the Information Technology Act, along with IPC sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy, extortion, cheating and forgery.
Cops claimed the gang originated from Bengaluru and reached Bengal towards the end of last year. This is first such case recorded in city recently.
