Maintenance-repair and capacity augmentation jobs are essential and we will have to be prepared for such situations once in a while. But completion of the task at hand on schedule is important.

There will be no filtered water supply to large areas of south Kolkata and its suburbs for the rest of the day. Water supply will resume on Sunday morning.

Sources in the KMC said the work will go a long way to ensure uninterrupted supply of filtered water from Garden Reach Water Works to major parts of south Kolkata and added areas such as Behala, Garden Reach, Tollygunge and Jadavpur. KMC engineers will oversee the “overhaul operation” since morning, said a civic official.
Replacement of valves at Garden Reach Water Works and interconnection of high diameter water pipes were part of an essential overhaul of Garden Reach plant, the capacity of which is being augmented in phases. “With one of the major treatment plants with a capacity to supply 25 million gallons of filtered water nearing completion, the much-needed overhaul work will ensure more potable water to residents of large parts of south Kolkata and its suburbs from next summer,” said a senior official of the KMC water supply department.
Necessary maintenance work at 14 major booster pumping stations and 15 capsule booster pumping stations across Behala, Tollygunge, Jadavpur and Kasba will be beneficial for at least 10 lakh people living in added areas who will be treated with potable water in enhanced volume. “Necessary repair and maintenance work at booster pumping stations will ensure less wastage of water and maintain a high pressure that will ultimately benefit the citizens in a major way,” a KMC official said.
