KOLKATA: Veteran Bengali elocutionist Pradip Ghosh (78) died in Kolkata on Friday.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, mourning his death, wrote in a message, “He was a shining star in the art of elocution. He has worked as a joint director in the state information and cultural affairs department. My condolences for Pradip Ghosh’s family and fans.”
An unparalleled elocutionist since the late 1960s, Pradip Ghosh worked towards popularizing this art to the hilt, with his live performances and scores of albums recorded in cassettes and CDs. The social media was agog with condolences since Friday morning, with people posting pictures of the celebrated elocutionist who was well-known for his unique and inimitable style of recitation.
The state government in 2017 awarded Ghosh the “Kaji Sabyasachi award” for his contribution to the field of performing art.
Ghosh was among the pioneers whose to whose recitation of poems, especially those composed by Tagore, towards professional excellence. It was during his time that people started buying tickets to listen to Bengali poetry recitations and bought records by famous elocutionists like him. Ghosh was inspired by his father Chinmoviban Ghosh, and started reciting poems before he learned to read or write. He delved deep into the poetry he recited, presenting Tagore in foreign shores as well as the various parts of India. “Tagore is my first love,” he would say as he honed a new style of performing the bard’s poetry, especially those penned for children, in the normal, everyday genre.
