Kolkata: Residents wake to stench of decomposing body, find woman living with father’s corpse for days – Times Now

Kolkata: In a shocking incident, a woman was found living with the dead body of her father in Sarsuna area of Behala in Kolkata, West Bengal. The matter came to light on Wednesday after local residents complained of stench emanating from the decomposed body. 

The 51-year-old woman identified as Nilanjana Chaterjee was living with the decomposed body of her 86-year-old father Rabindranath at a flat on Rakhal Mukherjee Road. 

According to a report in Times of India, this is not the first time that the woman lived with the corpse of a family member. Earlier, Nilanjana did the same with the body of her mother and brother in the last one year. 

The woman’s brother had died in February last year, while her mother passed away five months later. Neither Nilanjana inform police nor cremate their bodies and continued to live with the corpose.

The report suggests that the woman along with her father and mother Chhaya had spent two days with corpose of her brother. When Nilanjana’s mother died, she and father lived with Chhaya’s body for two days. 

On Wednesday, local residents informed Sarsuna police after severe stench emanated from the flat. The police then recovered the body and sent it for postmortem. 

“It seems Rabindranath was bedridden for one-and-a-half year and the family survived on the ration given by the locals. We are seeking help from locals and NGOs to ensure the survival of Nilanjana,” tthe report quoted a police officer as saying.

The house where the family resides was in a very bad shape. According to Deputy Commissioner (Behala) Nilanjan Biswas, the family seemed to be suffering from mental illness which was evident from the condition of the house. The police are waiting for the autopsy report to find out the time of death.
