Calcutta HC admits writ on delayed FIR against journo – Times of India

KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the West Bengal director general of police to enquire into the filing of a delayed FIR without an inquiry against Safikul Islam, a journalist from Arambag in Hooghly, that led to his arrest.
His wife and a reporter working for the news portal run by Safikul’s family too were arrested. The scribe’s brother, Rafikul Islam, filed a writ petition in HC, alleging that police acted after Safikul highlighted certain irregularities of the state government. Justice Joymalya Bagchi admitted the petition and passed directions to the DG.
The DG will have to ascertain why there was delay in filing FIR and if there was any malice involved. The enquiry will have to be conducted by a senior police officer but no report can be filed without leave from the court, Justice Bagchi directed.
