KOLKATA: A fire broke out on the ninth floor of an eleven storey (G+10) residential building in an upscale Alipore area on Saturday evening, police said. Though there are no reports of any casualty, the incident has left the residents of the building on Belvedere Road panicked.
Cops and fire department officials also had to evacuate the residents . According to fire and police department sources, the fire was first noticed at a room in the rear side around 8.35 pm by locals, who raised an alarm. Within minutes, flames leapt from the room and engulfed the entire area. Soon, residents started making a dash for the ground floor. The call to fire department was made by 8.40pm.
“We ascertained that the fire had broken out at the servants’ quarters. We initially rushed two fire tenders, three more followed soon after. However, only three fire tenders were pressed into action. The fire was finally brought under control within 50 minutes with the cooling process kicking in by 9.30 pm. Our officers worked there till late at night. The fire could be restricted to the rear side of the building where the servants’ quarters are located. The damage, otherwise, could have been more,” said a senior fire brigade official. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, he added.
“At 8.35 pm, a fire broke out at a room in the servants quarters located on the ninth floor of a G+10 building at 22/1, Belvedere Road. Three fire tenders were at the spot. There’s no report of anyone trapped or any injury. The fire has been doused in a short span of time,” said DC (south) Meeraj Khalid.
