Kolkata: Early morning today a twenty-year-old woman was shot dead in broad daylight allegedly by her jilted lover in Kolkata’s Regent Park area. Preliminary police reports suggest that Priyanka Purkait, a third-year student from the city’s Women Christian College was murdered by her ex-boyfriend Jayanta Haldar inside her home in Anandapalli neighbourhood in South Kolkata.
Kolkata Police say that the accused lived close to her house and arrived this morning around 8 AM. Haldar reportedly barged into the house of the victim and shot her from point-blank range without any sort of provocation. The accused has been absconding since and now a manhunt has been launched to nab him.
Regent Park Police looking into the matter said that the accused and the victim were in a relationship and that the woman had found out the accused was married and had cut all ties with him. Police are questioning the family to retrieve more information as investigations are underway.
“I saw a lot of crowd standing outside the house, when I asked, I was told Priyanka had been shot in the neck by a man who had come on a motorcycle. By the time people reacted to the situation, he had already fled. Priyanka was rushed to the hospital,” said a neighbour.
Another local who lives a house away from the victim’s said, “I was sleeping in the morning, when I heard a loud sound. I ran to the window to see what had happened. Priyanka’s family was screaming that someone had shot her. By the time I went down, the accused had already run away.”
