KOLKATA: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has swung into action to restore situation after the widespread damages that occurred in areas of Salt Lake, Rajarhat and New Town due to cyclone Amphan last Wednesday.
The Bidhannagar civic authorities has formed several teams consisting of civic workers to cut and remove the fallen trees from the roads and bylanes across Salt Lake and Rajarhat. Work was conducted throughout Friday and more are being taken up.
“Most fallen trees from the First Avenue stretch was cleared by Friday afternoon. More drive will be conducted,” said a civic official. Over 2500 trees and thousands of electric poles fell in Salt Lake alone, according to civic estimates.
There was some disruption in water supply in areas of Salt Lake where water is being supplied from tank number 7 and 8 as some technical glitches had occurred in the tanks. The civic authorities repaired the tanks as water supply normalised from Friday afternoon onwards.
Boundary walls of several parks across Salt Lake were damaged as several trees got uprooted and even pulled up the walkway of the parks with it on which the trees were rooted.
Bidhannagar mayor Krishna Chakraborty along with senior civic officials is taking stock of the overall situation. “We are taking up clean up drive across the township to remove the trees and all necessary steps are being taken up,” a civic official said.
In neighbouring New Town also there were several damages with trees falling in several roads and stretches across the township. Widespread damages of trees and properties occurred at Eco Park. The glass panes of Utsari glass house was shattered from all sides, the Eco Island along with the house boat, Banglar gram structure and others were heavily damaged.
NKDA officials inspected the damages in Eco Park and necessary action will be taken up to restore things. The authorities are assessing the damages that have occurred in the township through drone photography and taking up with TRAI, STPI for quick restoration of mobile and internet connectivity in the township.
Civic workers were pressed across the township to normalize situation with clearing trees from the road which were completed fully by Friday. Bleaching powder were put on places where water had stagnated and work to restore the bamboo fences and uprooted traffic signals was on.
