KOLKATA: Super cyclone Amphan is inching towards Kolkata at a speed of about 26kmph currently, causing a wind speed of 160-170kmph gusting upto 190kmph. At present it lays only about 190km to the south of Kolkata. Apart from rain, the wind speed in Kolkata, however, is not significant yet. But the Met office predicts a wind speed close 100 in the city when the cyclone will make a landfall.
“It will move towards north-northwest and cross West Bengal Bangladesh coast between Digha and Hatiya close to Sunderbans during afternoon to evening hours with a wind speed of 155-165kmph gusting upto 185kmph,” says a latest bulletin from IMD.
Going by the current speed, Amphan could make its landfall at around 4pm or a little later. After the landfall the system is expected to move further north-northwest and come close to Kolkata. The maximum damage in the city is likely during this period.
The state government and the civic body has kept a number of disaster management process to counter the damage caused by the cyclone.
