KOLKATA: Lockdown and the suspension of classes in all schools across the state has led several institutions to roll back the fee increase or put the school fee on hold.
On Saturday, South Point School has decided that the fee structure proposed by the school for the ensuing academic year 2020-21 will presently be held in abeyance. Collection of various components of fee and other charges, including for text and exercise books, uniforms, bus fees, activity and other optional fees etc. that are usually collected in the month of April, has also been deferred for the time being till the school reopens.
“For reasons of economic hardships, some guardians may not be able to presently make the fee payment and the School has assured such parents that their case will be handled with full sympathy and they will be allowed adequate time, at least till May 15, to make the payment to the school without any fines. Presently, the school has decided to charge a lump sum amount as ad-hoc fees payable on April 15, and the next round of fee collection will take place in mid-June 2020, by when a clearer picture of the present situation is expected to emerge,” said spokesperson Krishna Damani.
The Vivekananda Mission School, which had decided to collect a bi-monthly fee in the beginning of April during the beginning of the new academic session has also put the school fee collection suspended. “We have to be sensitive and humane at this hour of crisis” added principal Sarmistha Banerjee.
A notice put up on their website by DPS North Kolkata reads also informs parents about the development of fee collection. “AS you all know we did not increase the fees last session, the enhancement of fee was due this year. However, keeping in mind the current situation which has caused many to face financial hardships, the management has decided not to enhance the tuition, session and the transport charges for the new session with regard to the request from the West Bengal government.
Several other prominent schools in the city are also awaiting a nod from the governing body to go ahead and discard the fee hike earlier announced for the current academic session.
