West Bengal: Fire guts Selimpur huts, damages flats – Times of India

Kolkata News

KOLKATA: Three huts were gutted and three flats in a residential unit were damaged in a fire at Selimpur Rail Colony bustee on Saturday evening. Three fire tenders managed to douse the flames in an hour.
Locals claimed the fire started at the huts next to the rail tracks barely 150m from Dhakuria station. “It was around 8.15pm when I spotted flames leaping from the huts next to our apartment. Within a minute, it spread to our first-floor residence,” recounted Reempa Mullick. She got her daughter and an elderly neighbour downstairs as soon as possible. “Our house continued to burn and we heard a deafening sound. It seemed that a gas cylinder had exploded,” she said.
Locals said that they had heard two gas cylinders going off. “It was windy and we were afraid the fire might spread fast,” said Amitabha Basu, a local.“There is a temple on the left of the huts, which stopped the fire from spreading,” said Rohit Hassan, a mason who works at a building nearby. Train services through Dhakuria were disrupted for a while after the fire.
