KOLKATA: The level crossing across Chitpore yard is ready for inauguration and is likely to be thrown open for traffic on Monday. The level-crossing was built parallel to Cossipore bridge with traffic signals on both ends of the railway tracks along with height barriers and speed breakers.
The level crossing that connects Braja Dayal Shah Road with Sethpukur Road and Pranakrishna Mukherjee Road, will help to reduce congestion that crippled traffic on Cossipore bridge. Moreover, after the new bridge opens, autos and heavy vehicles like trucks will be able to use the level crossing to move to and from the city.

Locals and auto drivers said the ease of traffic movement will reduce the travel time by a large extent. Autos are considered the most important cause of snarls on Cossipore bridge. If autos are diverted, movement along the way will be faster as they will take the level crossing to move between 4B bus stand and BK Pal Avenue.
“The level crossing will help us to move faster and the traffic congestion will be much less,” said Pintu Shaw, an auto driver on the route.
Till date, trucks plying between 10pm to 7am took a much detour to move towards the city from the BT Road end.
After the level crossing opens, trucks and other heavy vehicles coming from Cossipore Road, will be easily able to enter Prankrishna Road and then head towards Central Avenue.
The idea behind setting up the level crossing was to avail all possible alternative ways to carry vehicles and facilitate movement of heavy vehicles once the Tallah bridge demolition work begins. The railway board gave its approval for the proposal following which work started to set up the level crossing.
